In 1985, Sony introduced the Handycam, and the Video8 analog video/audio format helped make camcorders smaller and more functional than the bulky VHS and Betamax recorders that had been popular. Hi8 was an upgrade to the analog format by virtue of making provision for digital audio. The “8” references the 8mm video tape (Betamax tapes were 12mm) and the “hi” references the high quality.

Do you have any Hi-8 tapes taking up much needed storage space? About the size of a deck of playing cards, they are half an inch thick, 2 ½ inches wide, and just under 4 inches tall. They were just small enough to hang onto forever and forget about once they went up in the attic or in the back of the closet. How could you have known that forever had a time limit? But it’s true. The precious memories captured on the magnetic Hi-8 tapes from the late 1980s and early 1990s are disintegrating rapidly. They don’t make these tapes or camcorders anymore, so it’s important to ensure these video tapes — and the memories they contain — are preserved.
